Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge
Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge is just outside Santa Fe, New Mexico. Bosque is on the migration path of many birds and is considered a birder's paradise. In November each year there is a festival celebrating the thousands of Sandhill Cranes that come to the refuge each year. The Rio Grande runs through the refuge and before modern flood control projects the Bosque area was a natural stop for birds and all kinds of waterfowl as the Rio Grande overflowed its banks. Today the refuge simulates those conditions by scheduled flooding of large fields. We missed the magnificant display of Sandhill Cranes by visiting after the migration. However, we were rewarded with a number of birds and some amazing sunsets.
